Research on relations between Czechs and Slovaks: how do you understand?

Since the mid-90 of the last century, organized by the Department of Czech Language and Literature, Palacky University (UP KCJL) sociolinguistic project entitled "Contemporary Czech-Slovak and Slovak-Czech contacts. His means of trying to continuously monitor the change in the linguistic situation between the two countries after division of the former Czechoslovakia, which contributed to the development samostatnějšímu Czech and Slovak.

The project focuses not only on the actual possibilities of direct and indirect contact between the two languages, but especially on developments in the understanding of Czech or Slovak, especially among the young generation of Czech and Slovak. Moreover, the authors of the project to trace how each cut Bohemian expressions and slovakismy in both languages, and today looks like or how communication between Czechs and Slovaks in the Czech-Slovak Joint jakykovém environment.

The youngest generation ceases === === understand The whole project has two parts. The first is a sociolinguistic survey, which takes the form of surveys and field work, and the second is the field of linguistics, which monitors the contact and not contact the Czech-Slovak phenomena (slovakismy and Bohemian expressions), etc. And yet what is the result? „The project is long term, changes can not be expected in such a short period during which the project exists. The results are quite predictable: with dissertations, we find that the youngest generation, especially elementary school pupils, no longer understand Slovak. This is obviously due to the fact that they have heard so many options in our Slovak media, children are not accustomed to it, "says Musial Kveta KCJL of UP, which is one of the authors of the project. "But when you see a moment, the situation is changing, even as some people want to read Slovak texts themselves,“ he adds.

Learning === television can also

Generally, however, according to Slovak Flowers Musilova, which itself teaches Czech language for foreigners (particularly the Slovaks, Faculty of Law), for many Czechs still intelligible language. "You can not expect that at extremely genetically related languages is in such a short period of fundamental changes in character, so that the Czechs and Slovaks no longer fully understood. Moreover, since many Slovaks working with us in various disciplines or studying at universities, it is possible that through this direct contact with both languages, these languages will further alienate 'estimates. Important role to play by the author of the project and has mentioned the media – for example, just by Slovak actors are now commonly also packed with the high profile roles in the series, or invited to debating programs and talk shows, mainly contributed to ongoing maintenance of clarity between the Slovak and Czech. The exception here are not editors or Slovak speaking announcers weather.

Slovak in the Czech === === University The Czech Slovak universities are still seen as relatively equivalent language – candidates can sit an entrance exam in their knowledge of Slovak and Czech actually show just by being able to understand the assignment. The exception is perhaps the only disciplines focused on the Czech language (was Bohemian, philology, pedagogy, etc.), where candidates from Slovakia and other countries must show graduation from czech or her to perform the examination (more on the conditions in our study Slovaks Read „here“: http://www.vysokeskoly.cz/…em/index.php?…). According to Flowers Musilova is equality between both languages in our schools a good step – otherwise it would go on the artificial cultivation unnecessary linguistic barriers.

Slovak look at our numbers

The latest results collected, based on surveys in the years 2004 – 2005 (hereinafter referred to as 2005, attended by 94 students), 2006 – 2007 (2007, participated with 132 students) and 2008 – 2009, (2009, participated with 74 students) presented Kveta Musial in a recent paper entitled "Communication in the college-Slovak Republic (sociolinguistic survey). From him, we pick a few of the following data:

  • Majority of Slovak students „always means“ as written texts (2005: 60% 2007 60% 2009: 78%) and spoken (2005: 64% 2007 64% 2009: 79%). The remaining one percent answered „sometimes do not understand one word.“
  • Czech writing lectures, students commonly called „code switch“: an average of 30% of them have heard the text written in Slovak, around 60% as mixed, ie the Czech Slovak elements.

/ / Czech justifies the use of one of the respondents that „the Czech shorter words, which it believes to be“ practical for quick typing ". / /

  • Proximity of the two languages for Slovak students, this also in communication with Czech teachers: Almost one third of them use exclusively their native language, most speak „mixed form“, ie the Czech Slovak elements, and some are trying to speak Czech.
  • Also out of teaching in ordinary communication situations, Slovak students use their native language: more than half of them speak only about a third of Slovak and Slovak to Czech elements. Few students said they speak Czech.

/ / Eg. 22letá student said the reason: "I usually use Czech in contact with young children who hardly understood Slovak and Czech speaking foreigners. About his ambitions to speak Czech with other survey participants said: "I would like the spoke Czech, but still I have it for 4.5 years nanaučila. Children sometimes do not understand me ". / /

  • Czech environment due to the high percentage of students used some Czech words automatically, unconsciously (ie, unintentionally) many respondents are not recoverable Slovak equivalent (2005: 53% 2007 38% 2009: 46%), some students, however, his speech correct (2005: 29% 2007 36% 2009: 34%).

/ / About a third of respondents said that in the context of their relatives that they have noticed the change in expression from an extended stay in the country. A smaller proportion of students believe that no Czech word not used. / /

  • Most respondents in our linguistic misunderstandings encountered: less often (for obvious reasons) in teaching (2005: 39% 2007 48% 2009: 47%), more often in everyday communication (2005: 64%, 2007: 57 % 2009: 81%). Probably was not a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature that would prevent further communication, we can reasonably assume that the Czechs Slovaks understand more than vice versa.
  • One of the sets of questions ascertaining the views of students in translating from Czech to Slovak, and vice versa, most of them seems unnecessary, especially as regards the translation from Czech to Slovak. But some respondents commenting on their remarks reflected the fact that the younger generation (mostly Czech) falls close to the level of understanding language. The need for translation of Czech literature considers the Slovak scant percentage of respondents (2005: 3%, 2007: 5%, 2009: 1%), approximately one quarter does not know. A similar assessment applies also to the dubbing – mostly Czech Slovak dubbing films respondents perceive as unnecessary and intrusive.
  • Respondents also commented on his relationship to the use of contact-linguistic phenomena – Bohemian expressions, in Slovak. Answers „Slovak harm“ and „enrich the Slovak“ are the majority opinion in this part of the vocabulary. Objecting to bohemismům showed about one-fifth of the respondents.
  • In addition to linguistic factors have an important place in the relations of different ethnic groups also factors mimojazykové. Slovak students in our country constitutes a closed community, spend time with both our countrymen and to a large extent, with the Czechs. Pursue cultural, sporting, political and especially economic developments at home. Although the Czechs under the STEM agency and other sources of long-term (typically) a positive relationship with the Slovaks, unfortunately, met with some of our respondents with xenophobia against the person (2005: 22% 2007 18% 2009: 22%). The most frequent reason reported an emotionally tense situation in the joint watching sports matches of the Czech and Slovak teams, but also problems related to lack of accommodation on the track. Even more serious conflict described 18 year old student: „Mrs. stations refused to issue me a license to scholastic Czech Railways since, students vyciciavajú Slovak Republic '.“

/ / Respondents perceived as a manifestation of xenophobia that, when the Czechs pretend that they do not understand, the words describe a situation 24leté students: "Sometimes I feel that I mean people though, I do not understand. Frequently it happens to me in the shop. 50nici, I think that with the slovenščina would not have problems ". / /

  • Many of Slovak students (2005: 35% 2007 29% 2009: 42%) want after graduation just to find employment in the Czech Republic (to date, the online questionnaire was completed more than 300 college-Slovaks, have chosen this variant of 54% of them). Such a decision expressed in the questionnaire, especially students who are studying with us for longer than two years. Besides the language barrier is a lack of motivation to stay in the CR in particular their belief that they will find a better job (in addition to better financial rewards) than in the Slovak Republic. It is therefore a realistic expectation that we will continue to be the two languages in contact.

How do I participate in the project

The long-term survey is open to all interested parties to participate via an Internet questionnaire. On the website „Palacky University in Olomouc“: http://www.upol.cz/…e/2664/6353/ currently found two: one intended for „the general Czech public“: http: / / spreadsheets1.google.com/viewform? formkey = dGY3bUJ6eGkySGxxZVp2QVFtSC10X2c6MA and the second, which is intended only for Slovaks studying at Czech universities ": http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?….
