At the time of 3 July 2011 to 3 October 2011 is more polar Expedition University of South Bohemia in the Czech Budejovice Svalbard. The expedition led by Assoc. Josef Elster involved a total of 27 workers at the station in summer season půběhu relieved.
Research Station University of South Bohemia is located in the Gulf Petunia – Billefjorden, Isfjorden about 60 km north of the administrative centers Svalbard – Longyearbyen. Research Station is one of the northernmost scientific bases, is almost 79 ° N (GPS station coordinates: 78 ° 40'N, 16 ° 30'E).
** The first report from the site (Kavan) ** The first part of the expedition crew JU BW on Svalbard in the composition – Josef Elster, Oleg Dietrich, Kodádková Alena, Daria Tashyreva, Tomas and Jan Kavan Tyml – came third July midnight in Longyearbyen. We have completed a safety course at UNISA shooting, picked up a new Zodiac boat and just going to buy the last novelties and food supplies that will last us until the arrival of cargo on Friday. Tomorrow (Tuesday) morning sail to Petunia. Josef Elster remains in Longyearbyen to handle administrative matters, others moving to the station and prepare it for the arrival of the first batch of students in the course polar ecology. The first students will arrive during Thursday and Friday, together with colleagues from Masaryk University in Brno and Charles University in Prague.
The temperature of 7 degrees Celsius, cloudy …
** The second report from the site ** Departure of the first group began this year's expedition, Faculty of Science University of South Bohemia in the Czech Budejovice in the Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. The new project, which we acquired in 2010 from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (CzechPolar) we could begin the longest and largest expedition. The expedition began leaving the first third of the participants July and will return the last participant finished third October.
Our work, in addition to the continuation of sub-science programs, it also includes two off-road courses Polar Ecology. These courses follow a weekly lecture trainings, held in June in Czech Budejovice. The first approximately 15 daily rate, which takes place at the station of our university is focused on the fields of inanimate nature (Climatology – glaciology, geology – geomorphology and limnology – Hydrology). More information about the course are also on the website (www.polar.jcu.cz). Course instructors, in addition to twelve students participating in scientifically oriented universities (University of South Bohemia, Masaryk University, Charles University and Czech Agricultural University – giant. 1, left Kodádková Alena, Daria Tashyreva, Klara Vočádlová, Catherine Kopalová, Jan Kyselka, Jan Kavan, Kamil Love, Zbynek Klose, Jan Flašar, Blanka Pechačová, Tomas Jagoš, Klivanová Lucie, Martin Hanacek, Hana Beitlerová, Daniel Nyvlt Oleg Dietrich , Pavel Prosek, Hana Honey, Denise Witoszová, Zbynek Engel, Josef Elster, Vojtech Jirasek, Linda Nedbalová and Otakar Strunecká). Traditionally, upon arrival at Svalbard in all we UNIS (University Centre of Svalbard) have received training in rifle shooting as a possible defense against polar bear attack (Figure. 2). Upon arrival at the station followed the necessary adjustments to accommodation, repair the roof at a student house in a major reorganization bedroom cottage, sorting and storage of equipment and food. Climatological-glaciologická překontrolováním group hurried to and downloading data from all year round in recent years installed automatic weather stations (Figure. 3). Geologists-geomorfologové began with the exploration of all the edges around the station is located glaciers (giant. 4). Using varying geomorphological methods (scoring on blocks of stones caused by moving glaciers – giant. 5, grain size analysis of glacial sediments) reconstructed phase of the retreat of glaciers. Limnologové and hydrologists measured the flow of glacial streams, the lakes have moved on a little boat and measured profiles day lakes and water physical and chemical parameters (Fig.. 6). In the last stage of the course all three groups work together on a detailed survey of glaciers Bertilbreen. The aim of this measure is long-term evaluation of the balance of glaciers (decrease or increase in glacial mass – giant. 7). In the morning at breakfast and evening dinner at the station varies humming hive, everyone communicating daily experiences (Figure. 8). Students and teachers dead branches course Polar Ecology 20. participants were replaced in July branches wildlife.
** Students in the Earth Sciences field course (Alexander Bernard) ** Earth Sciences students arrived at the ninth party members July. With them came the other lecturer of the course – Pavel Prosek, Kamil Love, Daniel Nyvlt, Zbynek Engel and Linda Nedbalová. The first day we spent the organizational work – transporting freight and accommodation arrangements.
In the Sunday, the 10th July started his own course and three thematically divided into the groups have taken the field. The group of climatologists worked mostly around weather stations in the coastal area and subsequently worked Petuniabukta the establishment of monitoring glacier mass balance Bertil. The glacier Beril worked then all groups – geomorfologové and hydrologists.
Geomorfologové devoted mainly to the study of glacial and periglacial landforms and hominových collecting samples. Furthermore, the surface of glaciers Bertil focused and prepared for monitoring the speed of glaciers.
Group hydrologists have focused on mapping and characterization of lakes in the Bay of Petunia including collection of samples for analysis of Hydrobiology. Sampling of planktonic organisms and the measurement of physical parameters has been realized even in the bay itself Petunia. I also spent a flow in local streams and the selection of sites for the establishment of long-term hydrological monitoring.
During Wednesday and Thursday students are leaving and will be followed by another group – students of biological fields.
